It’s a Big Deal

interestingcropwebA few weeks ago I shot headshots for a new web company’s “About Us” page.  They just launched yesterday at Bigdeal.com!  The headshots came out great and it was a fun excuse to use a ring flash.  Check out their unique auction site and get some Big Deals before everyone hears about it…..or just go and admire the headshots.  Have a great weekend.

Happy Halloween and Other News

candywarehouse_2075_1317723336Happy Halloween out there.  Probably my favorite holiday as it is a great excuse to wear slutty outfits and eat lots of candy.  It is prime candy corn season, and thus far I have eaten lots of candy corn as well as candy corn flavored dots.  My official expert review: Good flavor, weird texture.  The tried and true original candy corn has been around for over 100 years.  Here is a link to a brief and nerdily fascinating history of its deliciousness on the National Confectioners website.

In other photo and food news, I have been shooting pictures of a Krispy Kreme Donuts shop for a new photo project.  Thus far, it has involved two trips to said establishment in Daly City, California.  It is amazing to witness the sugar glaze shower that enrobes each fried ring of goodness.  I have been shooting film so it is yet to be seen whether the photos turned out well or a reshoot (ie re-donut eat) is required.

In addition, today I shot the “about us” portraits for the website of a new start-up here in San Francisco.  I used a ring flash to create some fun and light hearted head shots.  I think everyone will be pleased with how they came out.

And finally, I just unpacked my new LaCie terabyte hard drive.  I am going to be so organized with all my little folders categorized into headings and master folders.  Ooh it is fun to geek out on storage.  I am even going to start backing up regularly.  You should too.

Have a great Halloween and Mischief Night and Day of the Dead.

Cool new artist alert

turn2new

I just stumbled upon Bill Sullivan’s work online and I’m in love.  He is New York based and having a show at the Caption Gallery in Dumbo.  I think the large scale is really stunning and I can imagine the overwhelming feeling of seeing all these people surrounding you.  It is giving me a new perspective on my own eating portraits and I all of a sudden feel motivated to shoot some more.  Thanks Bill.  Check out his website for more info about his process and portrait theories.

McSegways

Wowsers

I really love Segways and yearn to have one of my own.  How easy it would be to cruise around San Francisco in one of these bad boys.  This photo and article is courtesy of the blog Mission Mission, as they have the finger on the pulse of our fair neighborhood.  The irony of the image is almost too much for me to handle.  But I am jealous of their segwaying around all day.  I wish I had been there to photograph and bear witness to this wonderful example of capitalism at work.

Chinese Food

chinacampfood2chinacampfood3chinacampfood4chinacampfood5chinacampfood6chinacampfood7chinacampfood8chinacampfood9Nihao.  I spent the month of August in China, thus have not been updating the news here.  I spent the first two weeks volunteering in a village in Hainan, an island in the South of China.  Our fearless group of 12 volunteers spent our days working on the village road, teaching English, and most importantly cooking and eating.  Every three days it was my turn to help out in the kitchen.  A typical meal consisted of 4 different simple vegetable dishes, some eggs or tofu and a boat load of rice.  Much to my surprise we cooked everything using one cutting board, one knife, one wok and one burner.  At home I use 4 burners, and 10 pots just to make one dish but it sure makes it easier to do the dishes.  All our food was bought in the nearby market so it goes without saying that we ate local, sustainable, and maybe even organic.  Many of my fellow volunteers were from Korea, and one thoughtful girl brought enough kimchee to last for 12 people for 2 weeks.  All the food was delicious if a bit plain.  After 2 weeks I was ready to chow down on some spicy Sichuan food and search for interesting street food.  Those photographs coming soon…….

Classy Cooking

cookclass01cookclass02cookclass03cookclass04Acookclass05cookclass06Acookclass07cookclass08Acookclass09cookclass10cookclass11On Sunday, I took a cooking class with Emily Dellas.  She runs a cooking school out of her cool loft downtown.  The theme of the meal was healthy Summer eating.  She has an infectious happy energy and a loves to share her food knowledge with others.  I learned a few new skills while we cooked quinoa dolmas, tricolore salad, chermoula sauce over salmon or tofu, and frozen yogurt with berries.  It was all delicious.  Of course being a bit of a restaurant go-er, each dish reminded me of something I have had at a different restaurant only better, albeit involving more work.

It was an action packed evening.  Especially when a pan of oil caught on fire and the smoke alarm went off.  All part of the show I’m sure, and it made the end product even better.

Baked Goods

tropicalmuffins02molassesspicecake02counterI have been shooting a story on baking with applesauce for Mother Earth News.  The recipes are delicious, and for a few days there all I was eating was muffins.  The photos came out great, and I included a few here along with a shot of the chaos created in my kitchen.

Happy Grillin’

hero_flattenedHappy 4th of July Weekend!  It is a “big” weekend for grilling and barbecuing, so I thought I would feature this ingenious hot dog cooker.  Evenly cooked weiners every time, never burnt.  But in the spirit of gender equality, also check out the lady cooker at Roast My Weenie.

I am looking forward to some grillin’, beer drinkin’, and fireworks watchin’ tomorrow.  I am planning to make red cabbage cole slaw, tofu dogs, and maybe some cupcakes.  Yum.

Happy Independence America.  You are so independent.  all grown up.
